    Disability cycles & bikes

    a sensation of freedom

To some people bikes are something that goes well beyond the means of transport. Riding a bike symbolizes far more than a simple sporting or recreational activity aimed at fortifying one’s body and health. This is the case to many disabled people.

Viewed against a society that is sometimes inclined to consider disabled people as irreparably exiled and passive individuals due to the mobility limitations inflicted on them by a specific physical or mental situation, bikes then really become a true device for psychological well-being as it gives them a fulfilling sense of freedom and agility. All of the studies carried out in this regard attest to such view and they have established that, yes, the use of the bike does dramatically bring the burdensome sensation of fixity which often afflicts the disabled down to size, offering moments of unconditioned joy, vitality and rebellion

Available on the market are models of disability cycles and bikes suitable to satisfy any need and which are affordable for all. Depending on the use one makes of them, as well as the age and capabilities of equilibrium of the user, each model comes with its own characteristics and varies in weight, size, chassis and road-grip, so as to ensure the best possible stability. As with wheelchairs, so too disability cycles and bikes come both in the manual or the motorized (electronic) version: the latter usually offers the advantage of the so-called pedal assisted technology. Pedal-assist bikes are adaptive cycles equipped with a function which reduces the exertion and strain during the journey thanks to the aid of an electronic system.

Also, depending on type, disability cycles and bikes are divided in as many categories: bicycles, handbikes, trikes and tandems.

Handbikes, for instance, devised for people affected by disability or malformations concerning the lower limbs, move exclusively by making use of the pressure exerted by the arms of the driver onto specific crank-handles and is usually three-wheeled. Whereas tandems, bikes fitted with more than one seat, are generally chosen by the visually impaired as it allows for it to be driven by a companion.

For a selection of the best models of specific bikes, trikes, handbikes and tandems for the disabled, with pedal assistance system if required, you can search our catalogue.
