High technology with small dimensions…
Today with the word minicar or microcar (or also mini-vehicle or miniauto o small vehicle) they usually mean a tricycle or a light quadricycle, with a diesel engine and with weight limits very hard.
This kind of vehicle has a remote origin and already in the middle oft he XX century were presented various projects and they began to produce different models in all Europe. One example ist he English Peel P50 (with 50 cm cube of engine), which is considered the smallest car in the world; or the example oft he Italian Casalini with the Sulky of the seventies.
In Italy the highway code assimilates them to motor vehicles and in certain cases it allows the drive from 14 years upwards, getting simply the licence for motorbikes. The heaviest models, which have also a higher power, can be drive from 16 years upwards with the A1 licence, that is the licence for motorvehicle from cm³.
According to Massimo Nordio, managing director of the Italian branch of the Toyota: “in these microcars there is something special: in a chaotic city such as Rome the small car would be the ideal solution. It would be possible to go to the centre and to parkanywhere. The microcars represents a travelling idea, a perfect example of the concept concerning the reduced dimension. One time, to let the japanese understand why in so busy cities it’s important to have a small auto, I came to a dinner driving a microcar: it worked better than thousands words..”
CHARGES AND SECURITY
From an article of the La repubblica by Vincenzo Borgomeo: "charge to the microcar: the accidents are double as to the normal cars, they are expensive to insure against the theft and lot of mayors want these autos out from the city center. There is a law project which wants to rise the minimal age to be able to drive them (from 14 to 16 or even to 18 years). But no one talks about other aspects which have big importance for the microcars: with these autos people escape from the licence with points and, above all, there is the possibility to drive them even when the driver licence is expired. It’s not a coincidence that who drives these autos in the 59% are people over 50 years (only the 5% has an age from 16 to 25) and that in the 48% is a pensioner: they aren’t small autos for teenager.."
For the check and the security comparison of light quadricycles regarding to the other vehicles, some statistic of the 2008 were studied and came out that quadricycleds are two times more danger (death rate) than vehicles with two wheels; and they are 3 times more danger regarding to autovehicles. We have these datas thanks to the bigger possibility of imprisonment in case of impact (to stay catched in the middle) and to the exorbitant feeling of security in these vehicles and thanks to the wight legal limits and from cash test that are no standardised.
